How to Play (Instructions)
- 1
Rearranging Equations with Matchsticks
Matchstick puzzles are brain-teasing games where you move one or more matchsticks within an equation or shape to create a correct mathematical equality. Although the rules are simple, solving them requires a blend of creative insight and logical thinking.
- 2
Rules
You must move a specified number of matchsticks within the equation displayed on the screen (e.g., VI = IV + I) to make the equation correct. The number of matchsticks you can move varies depending on the specific puzzle.
- 3
Difficulty Levels and Variations
The puzzles range from beginner-level challenges that can be solved by moving just one matchstick to advanced-level problems requiring multiple moves or the alteration of mathematical symbols (+, -, =) in addition to the numbers themselves.
Cognitive Functions You Will Train
Sharpening Logical Thinking and Working Memory
This game effectively trains logical thinking—the ability to systematically reason out the steps to reach a correct answer—and working memory—the capacity to temporarily hold and compare the current arrangement of matchsticks with the state after a move—by challenging players to complete a correct equation by moving a specified number of matchsticks. Furthermore, the process of searching for the optimal solution through trial and error stimulates flexible thinking (the ability to discard preconceived notions and view problems from new perspectives) and spatial awareness (the ability to visualize the positional relationships and shape changes of the matchsticks). These cognitive functions are primarily associated with the prefrontal cortex and the parietal lobe; engaging in repeated challenges can lead to improvements in everyday problem-solving skills and mathematical aptitude.
